- What Causes Joint Cracking?
-
-
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- QUESTION: Every so often, after sitting around for a while, and then getting
- up to walk about, I feel and actually hear a cracking sound in my hip. I know
- I am not imagining this, as my wife can hear it to. It doesn't hurt but it
- isn't a pleasant experience. Do you know what causes this and if it is a
- serious situation?
-
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- ANSWER: Sounds which come from the joints are not too uncommon, especially in
- people with a bit of arthritis. There are a number of causes, and none of
- them are too serious. If the surfaces inside the hip have become worn and
- damaged by arthritis, there can be a sound created by the rough surfaces
- grinding against one another. Some times there are loose bodies, bits of
- cartilage or bone, that float around inside the joint space and can cause a
- sound as they are moved about by the motion of walking. Most of the time,
- however, the sounds are made by the tendons and muscles around the joint as
- they slip over a bump on the bone. Near the hip joint is a sac called a
- "bursa" over which tendons pass. If it is inflamed, it too may be a source of
- sound. While the sound may be startling at times, it is usually of little
- consequence and should not cause you any undue concern.
